Thoracic Surgery Track

Rotation Schedule 

Track Director: Jessica S. Donington, M.D., Assistant Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Associate Director, Thoracic Surgery Residency Program

Residents in the thoracic track develop unique advanced skills in general thoracic surgery and thoracic oncology, and acquire comprehensive training in cardiac surgery for acquired heart diseases. Training takes place at NYU's Tisch Hospital, Veterans Administration Hospital, Bellevue Hospital, and the NYU Cancer Center.

Half of the 3-year period will be spent on thoracic surgery and thoracic oncology rotations at NYU Hospital. Residents progress to performing increasingly advanced surgery and making independent decisions

First Year

  1. 1. General thoracic surgery/thoracic oncology (3 months)
  2. Location - Tisch Hospital

  3. Acquired & congenital cardiac surgery (6 months)
  4. Location: Tisch Hospital

  5. Adult cardiac, general thoracic surgery /thoracic oncology (3 months)
  6. Location: Veteran's Administration Hospital

Second Year

  1. Cardiac surgery, general thoracic surgery/thoracic oncology & trauma (3 months)
  2. Location: Bellevue Hospital

  3. Acquired & congenital cardiac surgery (3 months)
  4. Location: Tisch Hospital

  5. Adult cardiac surgery, general thoracic surgery/thoracic oncology (3 months)
  6. Location: Veterans Administration Hospital

  7. General thoracic surgery/thoracic oncology (3 months)
  8. Location: Tisch Hospital

Third Year

  1. Advanced Thoracic Surgery/Thoracic Oncology (12 months. Note: This year can include 1-3 months elective)
  2. Location: Tisch Hospital Exposure: advanced operative techniques, Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) and minimally invasive operative techniques, multimodality therapy and clinical trial design.
