Greg H. Ribakove, M.D.
Cardiothoracic Surgery
Dr. Ribakove is on Sirius "Doctor Radio" with Dr. Charles Schwartz Friday from 6 am to 8 am ET talking about the cardiac surgeries they perform every week on Heart Health.
Dr. Ribakove is an Associate Professor in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at New York University School of Medicine. An attending surgeon at NYU Medical Center, he is the director of surgical intensive care and co-director of lung transplantation. He is board certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and, with added qualifications in surgical critical care, the American Board of Surgery.
Dr. Ribakove was primarily responsible for the initiation of NYU Medical Center's leadership in minimally invasive cardiac surgery, which he introduced to his colleagues during his fellowship in heart and lung transplantation at Stanford University. This launched a multi-year research and clinical development program at NYU, leading to the routine use of several minimally invasive cardiac surgical techniques today. He and other NYU cardiac surgeons trained surgical teams at an international group of institutions to use these techniques and technology.
Frequently invited to speak at Grand Rounds and other academic meetings around the world, Dr. Ribakove has lectured at prestigious institutions including Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and Stonybrook University in New York, St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, and at educational symposia in the U.S., Japan, Singapore, Germany and France.
Dr. Ribakove is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and has presented and published his research at the annual meetings and in the journals of the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. He is a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the International Society of Critical Care Medicine and the Andrew G. Morrow Society of Cardiovascular Surgeons. In addition to authoring several book chapters in Surgery of the Chest, Mastery of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine, Dr. Ribakove's work has been published in the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, the Journal of Invasive Cardiology and the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation.
Dr. Ribakove earned his M.D. degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He did his internship and residency in general surgery and fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at NYU Medical Center and a research fellowship at the Surgery Branch of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. He has been a member of the NYU School of Medicine faculty since 1988.
